Festival of Projects

We invite you to the Festival of Projects "Landscape Evolution: Adapting Local Territories to Global Change" — a key event of the International Youth Geography Olympiad.

The Olympiad aims to develop in young people a holistic understanding of the interaction between nature, society, and the economy, to foster geographic literacy and a responsible attitude toward the natural and cultural heritage of different countries, and to strengthen international cooperation in geography education and scientific research.

That is why we invite participants not only to test their geographic knowledge but also to apply it in practice — to study a specific territory, trace how it is changing, and propose solutions for its adaptation to global environmental change. The Festival of Projects will provide exactly this opportunity.

Each delegation arriving at the Olympiad will prepare and present one project dedicated to a pressing geographic issue. The project should demonstrate how a specific territory is changing under the influence of natural, social, and economic processes, and what solutions help it adapt to global change.
We invite delegations to present their ideas, research findings, and practical developments implemented in their countries by answering the following questions:

  1. What is the most serious global threat to the territory of your country?
  2. How has the situation changed over time and space? For analysis, we recommend using graphs, satellite images in a "before/after" format, cartographic materials, and data on the dynamics of change over the past 20−30 years.
  3. What work are scientists doing and what measures are authorities taking to adapt the territory? These could include engineering protection systems, ecosystem restoration programs, the creation of new specially protected natural areas, the development of sustainable urban infrastructure, or the implementation of "smart" city models.
  4. How do you envision the development map of the region up to 2050? What changes, risks, and opportunities need to be taken into account?

Participation in the Festival of Projects does not affect the results of the Olympiad but is a mandatory part of it.
  • What is a poster session?
A poster session is a dynamic space where participants showcase their projects in the form of informative and visually appealing posters. It is an excellent opportunity to visually present the essence of your research, its methods, and results, as well as to connect with other participants and jury members. The success of your project depends not only on its scientific value but also on your ability to present it effectively both visually and verbally.
  • How will the poster session work?
The poster session consists of two parts:

    1. Brief project presentation (2 minutes): Each delegation presents its project in English, concisely and convincingly outlining the main ideas and results of its research.
    2. Interactive session: Jury members and other participants will be able to view the posters, ask questions, and discuss the results. This is a great opportunity to receive valuable feedback and establish international cooperation.
  • Poster design requirements:
    • Template compliance: The poster must be designed in accordance with the provided template.
    • Language: The poster content must be presented in English.
    • Format: A0 (841×1189 mm).
    • Orientation: Portrait.
    • Title: The title must not exceed two lines.
    • Affiliation: All authors must include their affiliation (the name of the country they represent).
    • Font: The main text must be in Calibri, no smaller than 18 pt.
  • Mandatory poster sections:
Research objective: A clearly formulated goal of your project.
Materials and methods: A detailed description of the materials and research methods used.
Results and interpretation: Presentation of the obtained results and their scientific interpretation.
Conclusions: A brief summary of the main conclusions drawn from the research.
